Chapel Services

CHAPEL SERVICES Navigation Everything done at St George’s celebrates the continuing action of God’s Holy Spirit in ourselves, in others and in the world around us. In celebrating life we are worshipping God. “The glory of God is humankind fully alive,” so said St. Irenaeus. Our main act of worship, therefore, is the enjoyment given to us by the people we meet and the activities in which we engage. Thus the Chapel is the heart that pumps the lifeblood that enlivens everything else that we do around St George’s. Our Chapel services cover many things but the three main aspects are the celebration of the Eucharist (the Mass), the Celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and the necessary preparation for these special events. We also use the Chapel periods for themed presentations as and when necessary. For example, talks on topics that are relevant to students at a particular stage of development, ceremonies to mark special events in the life of the school, such as Prefects’ Inductions. In the Chapel, we exercise reverence and worship of our Lord and God.

Jesuit Ethos Explained

JESUIT ETHOS EXPLAINED Navigation Our Jesuit Ethos flows from the twofold commandment of our Lord Jesus Christ, which stresses the love of God and love of one’s neighbour. This ethos is central to the development of St George’s College and Hartmann House as Jesuit Schools in the 21stcentury. It includes the strategic creation of both short- and long-term goals that place a particular emphasis on coming into personal contact with the triune God and reaching out to others, especially the disadvantaged. This finds expression in fostering an encounter with Christ as he is revealed in the gospels and the implementation of the Characteristics of Jesuit Education (1987), and the directions from other Jesuit sources as necessary. Elements of our Jesuit Ethos include the Pastoral Care of all members of the Red Blazer community, the teaching of Religious Education and the imparting of moral values, chaplaincy work and networking with the Province’s Education Office, as well as other Jesuit establishments worldwide. This is realised through activities, such as the practice of the Spiritual Exercises in retreats and other forms of prayer, service within the community and the wider society and regular religious practice in all our activities. A key expression of all this is the midday reflection which is practised by both Schools at the end of lessons, every day. This spiritual exercise follows from the Jesuit prayer of the Examen which is indispensable for Jesuits. Special forums are also set up regularly as avenues to familiarise and to deepen our appreciation of our joint mission in working towards the greater glory of God – AMDG. https://vimeo.com/389180273
